Sakes alive, you’ve reached five!!
This past month we’ve had so much fun watching you grow. Everyday your daddy comes home he asks you, “Have you grown today?” to which you usually give him your famous goofy smile. Besides your physical growth, you also seem to be outgrowing other things, clothes and activities included. I have to tell you something though,, as much as I LOVE watching you grow, I now understand what other mommies mean when they say they wish they could stop time. These are truly some of my favorite times and though there will be even better adventures to come, I will miss you at this age.
After Thanksgiving, a lot of this past month for us was spent in lazy mode, which I mostly blame on the winter weather [you should know that Mommy doesn’t really enjoy driving when the roads are yucky]. Indiana has received quite a bit of snow so far and there have been some really cold days. We have taken short road trips here and there, but we’ve mostly stayed home. Unfortunately since you’re still pretty little, you probably won’t get much playtime in the snow this year. Never say never though. Maybe we’ll get you out there in a month or so once we hook you up with a sweet snowsuit 😉
Speaking of winter, your first Christmas is next week! Yay! However,, I must make a confession. Since we are moving so soon after Christmas (the 28th!), Mommy hasn’t put up ANY decorations this year. No tree. No lights. Nothing. And she feels like a scrooge because of it. But the good news is, she usually loves decorating the house for the holidays. Trees, lights, stockings, baking Christmas cookies, the whole to-do. So even though this year was a miss, she can’t wait to decorate with you in the years to come. Hopefully you’ll love it and it can be our little thing. So, I’m sorry that things aren’t as shiny and cheerful in the house this year. I promise I’ll make it up to you with lots of kisses and snuggles. And those mean more than any stinkin’ tree anyway, right? 😉
Now some baby updates. You’ve always been and continue to be a good little sleeper. Your crib naps are improving too [thank goodness] !! Mommy has been working on some sleep training with you during the day and it’s definitely helped us get a better routine down. Once I see that you’re getting tired (usually 2 hours after you wake up in the morning and every 3 hours after that), I read you a book, sing you a few songs (You are my Sunshine & Goodnight Emery), rock you briefly then put you down in your crib while you are drowsy. I always cover you with a light blanket and turn on your fan + sleep sheep for white noise. Your paci is usually in place too. Your nap success is best in the morning, sometimes giving me a whole two hours of free time, though this isn’t always the case. Your afternoon naps are typically shorter, sometimes less than 30 minutes. And there have been times when you start dozing around 5 or 6p! No way, Jose! Not when it’s so close to bedtime!
Another Mommy confession: there are days when you sleep so well in the morning, I “reward” you by letting you nap on me on the couch or the Ergo in the afternoon. It’s still your favorite place to sleep and I’m treasuring every second that you’ll let me be your pillow. But overall, I’m pretty darn proud of our progress this month!
Last month we struggled a bit with your mood swings. This month, your temperament has [thankfully] evened out and you’re mostly happy during the day. Sure, you have your grumpy moments. But we now know how to read each other pretty well, which helps tremendously throughout the course of our day.
I decided this week that it was time to reintroduce the cloth diapers. And so far, so good! I’m doubling up on the liners because you’re a super-soaker and it doesn’t take very long before you are totally wet. I’m having to change you a little more frequently then I did with the disposables, but that’s okay during days when we’re at home. I’ve still got a box of disposables on hand for when we’re out and about, etc. And I may still go back to them at a later date. But for now, if we can reduce our carbon footprint by just a little, let’s do it!
Plus, how can anyone resist that bubble butt?
This week is your last week in our current home. Our first home in Indiana. The place we brought you home to after you were born. And the place you’ve grown into such a sweet little boy. Though Daddy and I are beyond excited for the next chapter in our lives, and know you will LOVE your new house, a little part of Mommy is sad that we are closing this chapter. Before we leave next Saturday, I hope to take you to a few places that we’ve enjoyed together over the last 5 months. It’ll be somewhat bittersweet. But just remember, it’s never “Goodbye.” It’s “See you later.” Let’s make some new memories, kid.
Five Month Stats: No appointment til 6 months! With the big crotch from your cloth dipes, you’re easily fitting into 9 month clothes – yikes!!
