It’s been a LONG time since I’ve written an official Emery update. I told myself once he hit ONE that I would cut back to every 3 months or so. So before I go forgetting all that’s happened over the last little bit, I’m here with an update.
Let’s start with the latest and greatest. Emery is growing like an absolute weed. And since I’m not a big fan of weeds, I’m also not a fan at the rate in which he’s sprouting. Too fast. But with growth comes personality and greatness and E is certainly giving us just that. At his 15 month appointment, he weighed in at 28.4 lbs (up from 24.5) putting him in the 89th %ile. Woo!! Guess that whole milk is bulking him up. He is also in the 80th %ile for height and 79th for head circumference. He’s a far cry from the little sprout who was only registering in the 18th %ile at 9 months.
He now has 9 teeth: 5 on the bottom and 4 on top. He’s cut one of his one-year molars and the others are getting close to popping through. He still continues to be a great teether with very little symptoms. I’ve even misplaced his amber beads and he’s still doing fine (guess that tells ya how well those work ;)).
This kid LOVES to eat. I know that’s shocking given his above stats and huge belly. He’d probably eat all day if I let him. One of his favorite signs is “eat” or “hungry” (which we use interchangeably), where he brings one of his hands up to his mouth repeatedly. And as you can guess, he’s pretty much signing that all day long starting from the time he wakes up. It’s hilarious. He’s also eating most everything that we eat. I’m still cutting bigger foods into smaller pieces, but he’s great at chewing things up. When he doesn’t like something, it comes right back up in semi-smashed form and he hands it to me. Yum. Typically these are the plain jane veggies which he no longer loves. His current favorite foods include chicken/ apple sausages, Goldfish or Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies, Chobani yogurt tubes, scrambled eggs, toasted english muffins with blackberry jam, pancakes, ANY berry/ fruit, asparagus, spaghetti/ butternut squash, mac n’ cheese, french fries (yeah yeah, mommy of the year) and cheesy spinach pasta.
As babies get older, pediatricians typically hint at weaning them off their bottles and pacifiers. Well, we’ve been working on this. And truthfully I haven’t been in any big hurry. When I first started writing this post, E was only taking a bottle at night before bed. But a week later, we have successfully gotten rid of the bottle all together! It was surprisingly easy. As for the pacifier, we try to keep it available only during naps and bedtime. But if he sees one laying around, it goes straight into his mouth every. time. It doesn’t particularly bother me at home, but the wubbanub looks a little silly when we’re out in public. I’m sure it’ll be a challenge to get rid of it completely, but we’re not there quite yet.
Emery’s sleeping habits are still fantastic. He usually logs 12-13 hours straight at night, usually from 7p-7a. Daylight saving’s time rocked his world only a tad, and now he occasionally gets up before 7. His napping habits have been the main variable. He started dropping a nap around mid-August (12.5 months old) and ever since then things have been a little tricky. I actually love him napping only once a day. It gives us more freedom to do things without feeling like we have to be home for a nap every few hours. But the challenge has been WHEN to put him down. Somedays he’s sleepy at 10a, other days he’ll last til 2p. I’m probably to blame for not keeping him on a strict schedule, but I try to base his naps on what we’ve got going on that day. If I get 2 hours out of him, I’m a happy camper.
If anything has changed, it’s that E is acting like a true toddler more and more everyday. In both good ways and bad. He’s always on the move, walking everywhere and running whenever he can. He’s been climbing up the stairs for awhile, but just recently he started maneuvering his way DOWN. He loves balls – big balls, little balls, any kind of ball (insert inappropriate joke here!). He also loves throwing them with his infamous grunt, “OOOHH!” He got an indoor climber for his birthday that has a basketball hoop, and he’s been practicing his hooping skills pretty seriously.
He is obsessed with rifling through cabinets, drawers, anywhere that has things he can get his hands on. He particularly loves my makeup drawer, his bottle cabinet and the pantry. I find spice jars all over the place. Oh, and pulling out all the plastic bags from their boxes. Yup, constant entertainment all day long.
His personality is evolving everyday. He’s full of energy, loves to play outdoors, and has a love/hate relationship with his fur-sister, Allie. It’s a constant battle everyday over who’s toy is whose. I’m guessing that won’t change anytime soon! He’s a man of few words, and currently says the basics: mama, dada, Aah (Allie). He understands a lot more than he can say and follows simple directions (“take this to daddy,” “put that away”). He can also point to his ears, nose, toes and belly with prompting. He’s a smart cookie (says every mama about their babies ;)).
On the not-so-good end, E definitely displays a lot of stubborn, impatient, and super sensitive behavior, which I’m aware is par for the course with a toddler. He’s still got a bit of stranger anxiety and so far he is NOT a fan of the Kids Club at my gym (yep, I got called out of spin class last week because he wouldn’t stop crying). He’s also a prize whiner. But of course we love him for all his traits, good and bad.
Despite the crazy mood swings, these days are truly the most fun we’ve ever had together. I love taking him to new places because he loves to explore. I also love revisiting places we’ve already been because now he’s so much more observant and interactive. The Children’s Museum is the perfect place for his little hands lately. I literally had a hard time wrangling him in during our most recent visit, he was having such a blast.
He’s also a huge love bug. He likes to snuggle, give open-mouth kisses, and come in for big bear hugs from behind. In the mornings we play in our pi’s and watch cartoons (loves Daniel Tiger, Sesame Street, Thomas the Train, and Curious George). But his latest love is books. He is constantly bringing one over to us to read (usually the same one). And he loves flipping through them when we’re in the car. His current favorites are the Little People books, Goodnight Moon, Little Blue Truck, & Llama Llama Red Pajama. I was a big reader when I was little, so I’m grateful he is finally showing interest in this department!
To wrap things up,, here are some recent pictures of my little man. Hold onto your ovaries 😉
And that’s a wrap for E month 15! Hopefully I’ll be back sooner than later because In 10 short days he will turn 16 months. Oy. Though I’m sure I haven’t included everything, I’ve got the essentials. I just love looking back at these posts. They are my unofficial baby book and they make me smile so big. Love watching him grow 🙂 Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!!
